The 3rd and 4th grade class has been studying government to start the year. We learned about the role of government, the branches of government and the role of citizens, which is to vote and take action. Within our school community, we identified a problem with the swing set on the playground. The bigger swing set has 3 of its 6 swings. As members of the school community, we decided to take action. Borrowing from the skills we learned in math, we estimated chain lengths, modeled the swings(chains, seats and S hooks) and calculated the total cost of the project. We then voted to elect representatives from class to present a proposal to the school board. The school board approved our request, and the new swings will be going up in the near future.
